Location

The Commune of Środa Wielkopolska is situated in the central part of the Wielkpolska Province. It is the widest and the only urban-rural commune in the County of Środa Wlkp. The geographical location of the town, head of both the commune and the county, is very advantageous. Not only is the town situated close to the region's capital - Poznań, but there are also favorable communication routs with many other centers. The main north - south rail line is crossing Środa Wlkp., and so is the 11 public highway linking the middle coast of Baltic Sea with Silesia. The road is merged with the urban layout of Środa Wlkp. with 3 one-level crossings at streets: Kórnicka, Niedziałkowskiego and Brodowska. There is also the provincial road no. 432 Śrem - Środa Wlkp. - Września, coming through the commune, linking with the public highway no. 11. An incredible advantage to the town is the currently built A2 highway, with its closest crossings within 25 km from Środa Wlkp. The international Poznań-Ławica airport is at the distance of 36 km.

Środa Wlkp. is situated within non-varied area, according to the sea level altitude. The longest river of the commune is Moskawa. It's inflow, Struga Średzka, creates vast Swamps (Bagna Średzkie) at the south-west side. The Swamps are a landscape protection area inhabited by many rare and protected birds` species, such as: herons, mute swans, grebes, black-headed gull, lapwings and others.

The only example of still surface waters is the artificial water basin created as a result of the Moskawa river backwater in the northern part of Środa Wlkp. in the years 1968-1971. Its geodesic area equals 47.7 ha. Weirs enable water accumulation aiming at carrying out the permeated watering or direct intakes. Depending on the water level, the reservoir area fluctuates between 22.9 and 45 ha. The reservoir was set up to increase the retention and for demands of the agriculture, industry and fire-fighting brigades. However, it's major role is to ensure the recreation back-up intended for the Środa Wlkp. citizens` needs. There is a sport centre on its left side, close to the frontal dam (within the administration borders of the).

Forests and tree stands are 6.70 % of the total Środa Wlkp. commune area. Most of them are located within:

- Urniszewo - Podgaj- Bieganowo - in the north-west part of the commune

- Ulejno - in the north part of the commune

- Winna Góra - in the east part of the commune

- Nietrzanowo - in the south part of the commune
